On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” America's largest city, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an bold commencement to his term.

An Unprecedented Leader

The new democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

The new mayor also faces concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has moved to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

The Basic Tests of Governing

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
