Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users using such drugs need to be informed of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the way of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.

This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is more common among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
