European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
